How to Cancel Memberships After a Death

Memberships to gyms, clubs, and professional bodies need to be cancelled after a death. Most organisations will cancel without penalty once you provide proof of the bereavement.

I’m calling about the membership of [full name], who passed away on [date of death]. I am the [executor/administrator] of the estate and would like to cancel the membership. I’d also like to ask whether there are any death benefits available.

What to ask for

  • Cancel the membership effective immediately (bereavement should override any standard notice period)
  • Whether there is a refund due for any pre-paid membership fees
  • Whether the organisation offers any death benefits or grants to the family (some trade unions and professional bodies do)
  • Written confirmation of cancellation

Gym contracts often include lengthy notice periods (30–90 days), but bereavement should be accepted as grounds for immediate cancellation. If a gym refuses to waive the notice period, escalate to their complaints department or contact Citizens Advice. Trade unions and some professional bodies offer death grants (sometimes £500 or more) - always ask before cancelling. Loyalty programme points (Tesco Clubcard, Nectar, Avios, etc.) can often be transferred to a family member - ask about this before the account is closed.
