The Five Ks (Khalsa articles of faith)¶
The Five Ks (Panj Kakar) are the five articles of faith worn by Amritdhari Sikhs. Those who have been initiated into the Khalsa. They are:
- Kesh, uncut hair, kept covered (typically by a turban for men and many women).
- Kangha. A small wooden comb worn in the hair.
- Kara. An iron or steel bracelet worn on the wrist.
- Kachera. A cotton undergarment.
- Kirpan. A small ceremonial sword or knife, worn in a strap.
In the context of a Sikh funeral (Antam Sanskar), families of an Amritdhari Sikh will usually expect the Five Ks to remain with the body. Funeral directors with experience of Sikh funerals know this; non-Sikh executors should make it explicit and ensure the Five Ks are not removed during body preparation. For a sahajdhari (non-initiated) Sikh, the body is dressed in clean and modest clothes, often with a turban or chunni (head covering), but the Five Ks are not required.

AfterLoss¶
Our Sikh funeral traditions in the UK guide explains how the Five Ks are observed at the time of death and during preparation for cremation. Funeral Wishes records the deceased's wishes around the Five Ks and the gurdwara to contact, so the family has a clear brief without having to ask sensitive questions in the first hours.
