Form PA1A

[source: gov-uk/form-pa1a-2026-04-30.html]

Form PA1A is the application used to apply for Letters of Administration in England and Wales when the deceased did not leave a valid will. It is submitted to the Probate Registry by the proposed administrator under intestacy rules. [source: gov-uk/form-pa1a-2026-04-30.html]

The form mirrors the structure of Form PA1P (the with-a-will version), but instead of attaching a will, it asks the applicant to confirm their relationship to the deceased and their entitlement to apply under the statutory order.

Where the estate is not an excepted estate, an IHT400 return must be filed with HMRC before PA1A can complete. The same fee applies as for PA1P: £300 for estates over £5,000. [source: gov-uk/form-pa1a-2026-04-30.html]
